Polyurethane Laminate aka PUL is a term often used by people when talking about textiles, fabrics, diapers etc. If you are one of the many people who don’t know exactly what PUL is, read on…

Technical Definition: Polyurethane Laminated Fabric (PUL Fabric) is a special utility fabric (typically polyester, sometimes cotton or polyblend) that has been adhesive heat laminated on one side to a layer of polyurethane film.

Simple Definition: PUL Fabric is basically a fabric that has a special film applied to one side. This special film is called the polyurethane film. The procedure used to apply the film to one side of the fabric is called lamination (more precisely: adhesive heat lamination). Hence the name Polyurethane Laminate aka PUL.

Properties:

  • PUL is lightweight and breathable.
  • PUL is durable enough to withstand (machine) washing in hot water & heat (machine) drying.
  • PUL is 100% waterproof (especially for diapers).
  • PUL is flexible and easy to sew.
PUL Fabrics are able to withstand 100+ laundry cycles. (Note: High quality PUL can withstand more than 100 laundry washes; typically around 150 to 200+).

It is usually 59-60 inches wide.

Original Use:

PUL fabrics were originally developed for hospital equipment where reusable waterproof fabric was needed.  Hospitals needed a waterproof barrier for mattresses and other uses.

GO GREEN

If you are one of the people out there who are striving to live a more eco-friendly lifestyle, then you want to start using reusable cloth products, many of which are made with PUL.

PUL fabric is widely used in the diaper market to replace disposable diapers.

Can I make PUL at home?

The simple answer to that question is NO.

It might sound like an easy process but, trust me, if you try doing it at home it will not come out right. There are a lot of factors involved that are required to ensure the polyurethane film is laminated at the right temperature & pressure levels.
