6 Questions with ... Poodelum & Missy Kate

1. What is your business name and how did you come up with the name?

Poodelum&MissyKate; Nicknames my grandmother used with my sister and me when we were little.

2. What do you sew?

I sew mainly OS pocket diapers and Ai2s with a pocket. I also love repurposing clothing to make cotton fleece fitteds/longies and wool soakers.

3. What inspired you to start your own home-based business? Do you have any employees?

I first started sewing cloth diapers after my younger son was born. I needed a way to save money after being laid off from teaching, so I started cloth diapering. At first, I purchased diapers, then I started sewing them for my son. After a while, I started sewing locally for other moms I knew. And I was a busy-body anyway; I needed something to do; I needed to create. I do not have any employees. I spend my evenings and some parts of my weekend sewing.

4. What is your favorite part about sewing?

The moment I get to turn and top-stitch. I also love my serger---the ease of completing a project so quickly. Sometimes, in the middle of large orders, when I've sewn one too many pockets, I'll just stop and take a break by cutting out a fleece fitted to serge it. It's therapeutic.

5. What is your favorite sewing tip/trick you wish you had of known ages ago?!

When I first started sewing diapers, I used to stretch my elastic every time, then cut it after it was sewn. I got smart and included an elastic marker on my pattern and I precut all my elastic. Sounds pretty dumb---but you live and learn. And now that I'm mainly sewing OS diapers, my elastic is the same length every time, so it's all pre-cut. I also poked holes in my pattern, so I can mark all the snaps when I trace. THAT saves a lot of time.

6. What is your favorite SIMPLIFI textile and why?

I am really in love with your PUL. Hands down it is the softest, most easy to work with that I've ever used. It just feels good in my hands when I work with it. I always make sure that I leave a diaper made from your PUL for last; that way, I end on a good note. :)
