FEATURED SHOP OF THE WEEK Little Black Cat Organics (Nicole)
1. What is your business name and how did you come up with the name?
Little Black Cat Organics. A few years ago, my husband and I lost our wonderful cat, Brett. He was a little black furball, and a part of our family. So, when I was brainstorming names for my new business, Little Black Cat just popped into my head and I knew that had to be it.
2. What do you sew?
I sew cloth diapers (mostly fitteds) and all sorts of cloth diapering accessories.
3. What inspired you to start your own home-based business? Do you have any employees?
When I was pregnant for my first child, we decided we were going to cloth diaper and during my search my some I decided, "Hey, this can't be that hard." I've been sewing since I was capable of operating a sewing machine so I figured I could tackle this project to save some money (and keep myself busy in those final weeks!). I was wrong about how simple I thought it would be, but once I got the hang of it, I kind of become obsessed with sewing diapers! My husband was the one who eventually pushed me into making it into a business. I'm so glad he did, too. I love making diapers for others! It's just me slaving away in my sewing room.
4. What is your favorite part about sewing?
I love to be able to take a piece of fabric and create something out of it! I've always had a creative side and sewing has definitely become my outlet. It's also a great perk to be able to alter your own clothes.
5. What is your favorite sewing tip/trick you wish you had of known ages ago?!
Tracing your patterns is a lot faster and simpler than pinning. I used to pin, pin, pin those patterns down. Why? I have no idea, that's just what I was taught. When I started making larger quantities of diapers at a time I started tracing so I could see how I was using my fabric up to try and minimize the amount of waste. Then I realized it was saving me tons of time. It made me wonder why I hadn't been doing that for the past 20 years. Also, serging whenever possible not only saves time, but I find results in much sturdier seams.
6. What is your favorite SIMPLIFI textile and why?
I adore the Hemp/Lyocell fleece. It is so absorbent and very sturdy which makes it so great for diapers. It's also so soft! People don't seem to be too knowledgeable about lyocell yet though, so I'm trying to change that one person at a time if I have to!
7. Website address?
my facebook page is facebook.com/LBCOrganics
8. Do you have a brick'n'mortar store?
