Maker Monday featuring Sunlit Valley!

Maker Monday featuring Sunlit Valley!

Welcome to the second instalment of Maker Monday on the blog! This week we are featuring another Canadian small business, Sunlit Valley! Sunlit Valley makes beautiful and functional clothing and accessories for children, but even if you don't have kids, this small business is worth following on social media if only for it's stunning photography, beautiful settings and adorable models. Here's what owner Katelan says:

What do you make?

We make baby and children's clothing and accessories.

Who is your customer?

Thus far our customers have been locals looking for something different from the big box stores in our small community. Our customer base is now pivoting to parents and relatives looking for long lasting pieces. They care that they are locally made and that the process is ethical and sustainable. We have recently expanded to online sales through our website and are now reaching even more of these customers all over Canada. They are inspiring me to become even more involved in a sustainable future, not only in my business but in my personal life as well.

How did you get started?

I started sewing only a few years ago as gifts. I had become so in love with sewing, I shortly after, took part in a local craft show but then realized [that] I wanted to go in a different direction. I then decided to rent a small store front and go all in. The community has been so supportive in helping me grow. I now have the store front, another small rented space within a collective space called "The Middle Ground Market" and a website.

Where are you located?

I am located in Sydney, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.

Why are eco certified and organic fabrics important to you?

It is a new world to me but I have become very interested in the process in which textiles are made. I love working with organic fabrics and the natural textures. It makes me feel I am doing a small part to redirect our customers thoughts on why slow fashion and why organic/eco friendly fabric is so important to our environment and how much is being dumped into landfills.

How did you find Simplifi?

I came across Simplifi a couple years ago simply googling organic fabric in Canada.

What is your favourite kind of fabric to use for your business and why?

I always choose fabrics that are soft to children's skin. Always considering stretch and comfort for play. Being kid approved is very important!

Follow Sunlit Valley on Instagram for a feast of the eyes and check out their online store here! If you happen to live near Sydney Nova Scotia, you can check out the Sunlit Valley boutique store at 20 Maple Street or in the The Middle Ground Market.
